The first occupational standards for adult educators were approved in 2003. Occupational standards for adult educators are described in levels 5 to 8 of the Estonian Qualifications Framework (EstQF).

Occupational standards for adult educators have been updated. New occupational standards were introduced and approved in 2017.

In relation to that, the occupational standard of the adult educator, level 7 now also includes specialisation in communications training.

In September of 2017, there were 438 professionally certified adult educators with in Estonia. Professional certification is provided by the Association of Estonian Adult Educators Andras.
